WINOL 16.11.11

This weeks WINOL was yet again set to a good standard. However I have been told I am too nice when reviewing so I need to try and be a bit more critical.

The headline story of WINOL linked to the front page headline of The Guardian and other newspapers as the unemployment rate reached 1million. I thought this made WINOL appear professional as it was up to date with newsworthy information. However one thing that I would change would be the way the information was transmitted to its audience. The discussion in the studio gave too many statistics to the audience at once. It was also clear that the information was being read from the notes which excluded the audience as it came across as a discussion between both newsreaders. I think that a voice over along with a montage of images such as job centres would have been more effective as people will have images to relate the information to.

The city council story was effective as I like the way the report is read as a voice over along with a series of images that show the council building along with local areas that belong to them. The images all link together well as there is a smooth transition between each image. The interview with Cllr Royston Smith the leader of Southampton City Council used a mid shot. I thought this worked well as it allows the audience to concentrate on his opinion which was clear and easy to understand. I understand that it cannot be helped at times however the report taken from outside had a bit of background noise. This takes the attention away from the report slightly as at points the noise is louder than the reporter.

I particularly found the child who suffered sexual assault from a neighbour interesting as it was based on a court report at Winchester Crown Court. The reporter would have had qualified privilege that allows her to name and show an image of the convict which she was given from the police as stated by the onscreen text. This rules out any problems with defamation as the person has clearly been identified via the image which prevents someone else with the same name being mistaken for a rapist. I particularly like the way the story was introduced with a quote from the Judge that described his attitude towards this case. I liked the fact that in the background was the court whilst Felicity read out the outcome of the trial. I thought the way she referred to her script was also very smooth apart from one extended pause where it appeared that she had lost her place on the script. This is only a minor point however as the rest of the court report was effective.

The story that inspired me was the Estonia awards ceremony where my philosophy lecturer had been nominated for an award. This was personal but interesting news to Winchester as it is a big achievement to be short listed for such a big award. I particularly liked the way the story was introduced with the man blowing a horn which set a celebration scene. I liked the way they included an interview with Tony Dean from Faculty of Arts and the nominee herself Shira however the background appeared to be dark. I think a light focused on both of the interviewees would have looked more effective as it would show them clearly. I particularly liked the way that part of her documentary was shown as it engages the audience and makes them want to watch it in full.

The sport this week as estimated was thorough coverage of the FA Cup 1st round where local team Totton were against Bradford. The sport was yet again introduced by a female news reader which I particularly like as it erases the stereotype of football being for men. One thing I did notice but i am unsure about is when introducing the sport Julie says 'and for the first time in the clubs history, they were in the first round proper.' If this is true the language used doesn't make sense but may be due to a mistake on the auto cue. The coverage of such a big match for the locals was very detailed and thorough (then again it would have to be long with 9 goals to show from the match!) But it was a shame the second half relied on the flood lights as the footage wasn't as clear as at the beginning of the match. This isn't a major issue as the audience can still see the goals and get an overall idea of how the game went.

Yet again another good WINOL programme that appears very professional and covers news that even the top news programmes such as the BBC would discuss.
