My review of WINOL 23/10/13

WINOL Bulletin

I am not sure if this is on the bulletin or the computer I am watching it from but when the presenter is talking it is out of sync as his mouth appears to be talking faster than the sound. There was a slightly different opening to the bulletin this time round as we didn't start with any of the stories we saw in the opening sequence. I wasn't sure if I liked the way it said 'More on those stories in a minute' and then went off to another story first.

The opening of the gas story with the natural sound and person lighting the gas cooker is very effective as it sets the story from the beginning. The twitter images and graphics are also well done and explain the point to the audience clearly. In the interview however the camera appeared to be slightly wobbly at certain times which would need to be improved on next time.

I think the in studio chat was good but seemed to go on for rather a long time. I started to lose interest part of the way into it and found it rather boring having no graphics or images. I think the packages are more interesting and keep the audience involved in the story. I am also unsure weather I like the cuts between the presenter and studio speaker as it seems to be quite obvious and less natural.

The youth mental health story concentrates on a group at the university itself, I think it would have been good to go outside of the university and find a group in the community as well. This would be more relevant to some of the audience who may not attend the university. At one stage the reporter makes a point and then there is a rather long silence before the interview is played which left me confused for a slight moment. The second interview also seemed to be quite long but the package was good and interesting overall.

The tornado footage was good and had a link to the public as it had been sent in to us. It was good that we also got interviews to go with this so it wasn't literally just reporting that there had been a tornado. The footage of the clear up was also good as it showed people actually doing things to try and repair the damage.

I liked the bird story and the establishing shots of the birds to inform the audience of what the bird looks like. I liked the action shots of the wildlife trust doing their work but I think it would have been good to see Lucy in this footage digging and doing something when starting her piece to camera. The piece to camera was also filmed with bulls behind her laying on the grass which can be quite confusing as the story was based on birds. I think it would have been better to have the Wildlife Trust people doing their work and digging making natural sound in the background as this is what the piece concentrates on.

Sport
I liked the presenting the sport being from a stadium, I think this is a nice change and gets the audience wondering what is to come. I find myself becoming bored by the sport reporting and sometimes find myself fast forwarding the match reports. I think this may be because I do not have interest in these teams and therefore do not want to watch the highlights. I do however enjoy the sport packages where the journalist goes and tries out different sports for themselves; so maybe they should include more of these each week to keep the audience watching. The Eastleigh sound didn't appear to be that clear and dropped out in places. The interview was good and I liked the way that it cut away to footage of previous matches when referencing them in the interview.

Access Winchester
I really liked the humour between Jack and Liam it kept me engaged and wanted to watch what they have been up to. I like the footage of the Harry Potter star at graduation it is just a shame that her voice was echoed in the cathedral. I think because of this it should have only been a few second clip rather than how long it was as it is hard to work out what she says. Could we have gone in closer or tried to get around this at all? The Celia interview is great and we did really well to get this as she is a famous actress. It is set up well and is clear but it is a shame there is a lot of noise and wind in the background and at times people shouting. I liked the cut to her starring in Dr Who as it shows the audience what is being referred to.

I really liked the App Conference stuff as it was exciting and interesting to most people. However I do think there wasn't much of a conclusion to this and what they got out of it. There was reference to a couple of apps but I wanted to know which apps to get and any that are upcoming that may be worth getting for a particular reason etc. The humour here was good and entertaining and I like the way their personality comes across.

The JCB interview is great and Harry did well with the setting and lighting of this. I did get the interview for him via Remedy Sounds which I am pleased with as he was a top artist a few years ago. I like the shots of him Harry got throughout his performance as well.

The opera theatre story has a good opening with footage being used from the theatre company themselves. It gives the audience an understanding of what the play is and what it contains. I think at times the lighting was a bit dark when the presenter was talking which may be something to think about in advance in the future. I liked the hand gestures but think there still needs to be more personality and excitement added similar to Liam and Jack to keep the theme throughout the Access feature. It is shame there wasn't more footage available or an interview with someone involved as this would have made the package more interesting and longer.

Absolute:ly

I really liked the testing tan review as I think this is current and appeals to a wide audience as the winter approaches us. I like the way the tests were carried out and the images give evidence to what happened with each tan. I think the range of tans tested were good as these three appear to be the most popular on the market at the moment. I think a couple more tests such as how much goes on your clothes whilst you are waiting to wash it off or images of water being chucked on her as well as the aftermath would have made the feature appear more exciting.

The heavy metal piece is good as that is a main trend at the moment. I do think however the image could have been laid out a bit better and also the images need to all be edited roughly to be the same colour and lighting etc. This can be done on fireworks for each image to make them appear more even and the same. I think there could have been a few more images as well as there is a lot of metal around at the moment on all sorts of shoes and accessories.

I think the Street Styles are coming along nicely and look good. The clothing is always different and concentrates on people wearing different styles which is good. I think to make it appear different from time to time you could focus on a  particular piece of clothing or accessory as well and have a close up on that to accompany the full length image. You could also make people pose certain ways that relate to their style that they are wearing.

I really like the work being produced for this magazine specifically the title names for each feature. It copies the 'play on words' theme that all magazines do with their titles to relate to the article and I think we are coming up with some really good ones.

We also have bagged ourselves press passes for the Clothes Show Live which is such an achievement as all the big magazines such as Elle will also be going to this. We also have a ex model, stylist and catwalk organiser to write a weekly column for our magazine which is very exciting. She also has a column with the Essex Style magazine which is a big magazine representing Essex which is a good link to have with us.
