I keep repeating myself each week that the WINOL bulletin is professional and consists of newsworthy stories. However I cant help it. The news team appear to be experienced and very critical of their own work which means it just gets better and better each week!
All of the news appeals to a niche audience as it is relevant to the local people of Winchester specifically students. The montage of clips at the beginning and end of the bulletin are effective as they give you an incite into the news stories featuring on the programme. They also act as a reminder of the current stories via the clips with limited sound at the end of the bulletin. The story I found most interesting this week was the student protest story against tuition fees as it relates directly to us students for our upcoming years at university. I like the fact the reporters go to the scene and report to us directly what is going on. The quality of filming was very professional and it was easy to hear the reporter from the background noise of the protest.
I liked the close up camera shot of the local MP when talking about the MP cuts, as they allow the audience to concentrate on his opinions of the story. It also allowed him to appear important which is a positive sign for the Winchester news team as they have professional interviews with the people most important to the news story. Similarly the establishing shots in the housing development story were effective as they set the scene of what the story is about. This story also relates to us students specifically as we will be moving out of halls next year searching for a cheap house to share.
The fade transition used between the housing development story and the bin update was good, as it showed a clear change in subject to the update on the local bin collection previously mentioned on WINOL. I like the way the news team updated the local people on this story as it reduces the moral panic and highlights that the serious issue has been resolved. The footage of the clean streets along with the voice over worked well as it enabled the story to be short and to the point.
The sport as usual was professional with the best clips selected to inform the public on how their local teams are getting on. I also liked the way a female was given sport to report on this week to rule out any gender issues. One little issue I noticed after the football story, was when the camera appeared to be to the side of both reporters. This lead to a cut being used to focus back on George. I think it would have looked smoother if the camera had been infront of the news readers to start with as it could have then focused straight onto George. Having the Olypmpic story of the torch route across local areas shown on the map was interesting, as it was specific to locals and creates excitement that the torch will be passing through Winchester. This also linked well with the GB fencing team that came to Winchester to teach students how to fence. The footage was clear and I liked the interiew with the GB consultant as it makes the story more professional.
Yet again well done to the WINOL team, another successful and professional news bulletin :)
