Briefing- WINOL

The viewing figures for WINOL according to, The Unique IP which is the figures from separate computers outside of the university was at 358 which appears to be pretty good. There are also over 300 hits from the site page as well which doesn't appear to be too bad but could do with being even higher. This also doesn't take into account any views that we gain through YouTube.

Travel and Adventure appear to be the highest viewed feature site even though it is not regularly updated. This could be due to traffic coming through from the likes of Sean's car reviews etc so we need to work out how we can do that for our fashion magazine. We have made sure we have gone through all of our work and added tags relevant which may help us.

There needs to be an editor for the front page of WINOL who keeps it all regularly updated to ensure that we get an audience for the daily news; this person will be the news editor for that week.

It is always good if you can get 'celebrity' written in your headline obviously if it is relevant. It is evident that people are coming to our site for the features and then taking a look at the news which isn't the way it is supposed to be so this needs to be worked on to make sure the news is interesting to engage an audience.

In order to make WINOL work more efficiently, once a package is completed we need to make sure that we take it to the editor, check that they receive it and that it is all ok so that it goes in the package if it is good enough. This will make sure that no packages are missed out or forgotten about as they may be really good.

In Angus notes on WINOL last week it was picked up that Spence story about graduation and 20% of Winchester students being more likely to get jobs than others was underplayed in the bulletin line up. However it was said that the angle that was eventually taken on this story wasn't decided until much later on; closer to the deadline. Overall, it should have been a top story as it is a success story relating to us.

The news editor was not confident in choosing which packages to put in the bulletin and needed to order them according to the news content and not how much work people put into them. The organisation for WINOL was really good however not as organised as Sports Week which showed in the bulletin so this is something that needs to be improved on.

Due to the organisation side being pretty much sorted it means we can now push the graphics and get working on them particularly for stories in the bulletin as they look good. Statements on the screen in packages is now banned especially ones that are really long. We now need to use graphics instead and data journalism to make it look more interesting. Sport used to have the highest viewing figures but it lacks now so we need to make sure we include interesting sport stories each week.

In regards to press officers; they are not our friends, they are aware that we cannot run a story without balance. If they do not like your story then they will refuse to talk to you or put you off getting an interview or comment. In this case, you can literally state that they 'refused to comment' and that can sometimes be more effective than having to give their side to the story anyway.

The Today Programme actually state that the company or person was 'unavailable to comment' but we believe that unless the person is dead they will be free at some point to comment. You must always turn up for an interview if you have arranged one. This is key as we have spent many years building up our contacts and stitching up a councillor etc can damage our reputation and their involvement with WINOL. If you cannot make the interview for a genuine reason you need to make sure you phone them up and apologise and rearrange the interview. If the person you need to interview is based far away or something then you can always do a phone interview or even use Skype as this can be very effective if done well.

Trent TV News
At a glance this bulletin does look very good and well done however there are still many things that make it less professional than WINOL. However; it does have a really good voice who is very assertive and staged which is what we need more in WINOL. Its shots are good as there are just image after image with no pan or movement on them. The colour balance is also very good and the strap line looks well done with its green and blue background. However their sound in the interview is not as good as they have not used a radio mic.

Their off cuts to what is happening is very good whilst the interviewee talks over them to explain what is going on. It is mixed with the natural sound which also makes it more life like. They have used a drop intro which could work for this story however not in this case as they have used it as the top story. Editorially it is not strong with a little flood in a student house being its top story. It would have also been good for them to have got pictures when the flood was happening rather than afterwards. The interview is also far too long with the overall package being 6 minutes long! There is also no balance in their story which would need to be added in.

Back to WINOL, the editor each week needs a choice of packages to choose from. This means that not all packages would have to be used and any that have problems or aren't as good as the others can be ditched to make the bulletin stronger. Ideally you should only use 40% of what you have for your package when it comes to pictures, getting extra interviews so you can use the best of what you have to put into the package.

There is no reason why the news room phone is not used as it is free and people should always be needing to arrange interviews and chase people up etc.

In features we should always use 'here we are at...' when introducing your piece not 'I went to see' as this is the past tense and we can already see that you are there. We also need to know in advance what it is that you want to film also who you want to speak to and the type of shots that you want to achieve. You should also plan your piece to camera and know where you want to film it roughly and what it is that you want to say. Once it is all in your head then it will all be easier to set up when you get there.

Absolute:ly
Although we seemed to have achieved a little criticism from people on other areas of WINOL, I am pleased with how the Absolute:ly magazine is coming along. It is current and we are also covering the latest trends before the likes of Elle and Vogue which is an achievement as it shows that we are up to date and in with the latest trends.

There are a few images on the site which aren't as strong as others when it comes to lighting however I am aware that these are being resolved and it isn't bringing the site down in anyway. I think the Dr Fashion piece is good as they are regular. The before and after shots are going to be taken in the studio to give a good clear picture to relate to it. I also think the 'Get the look' weekly pieces are also working well as it involves going out into the public and asking them about their outfit etc. This is a simple piece but rather effective and appears in nearly all magazines. The vox pops to go with it are also a good idea as they bring some voice to the magazine making it seem more alive.

We have a podcast this week that is based on these two pieces. It will discuss what they both do and how they do it etc. It will also talk about anything that they may find difficult and any problems that they may have faced and resolved.

As for the general beauty, fashion and hair pieces they are looking really good and I really like some of the titles we have come up with. A play on words is often the best thing for this type of magazine and really link to the articles. I think we could improve a little bit with the text piece as some do not seem to be as long and others could include some products or makeup, etc that may accompany your product if you do not have much else to say.

I like the idea of our other weekly piece that we have come up with 'my week in beauty' which will be about one of the fashion team each week. It is a weekly thing and is more personal to us as individuals but similarly interesting to the audience as it does not just include products.

I also particularly like the fake tan review that is new to the site as it is a test not just a written piece reviewing the products. I think the images are good as they show that it is something that has been tried at home but also gives the audience advise on which fake tan is best depending on different situations. Fake tan is something that people will be looking into getting as the winter months draw closer so this gives them a genuine review with evidence on which brands are better.

We are starting to bring a variety of things to the site as well as introducing some video pieces in the future which will also look good on the site. I am overall happy with how the features team work together to provide a good amount of quality work each week keeping our site current and each section regularly updated.

We are also still waiting on the development of the site to make it more picture lead in a similar style to Glamour. Currently the site is hard to get around and there is too much space and scrolling needed to see work. The category section is also not easy to access and confuse the audience as they are not aware that there are other work in sections. We also want to link our Twitter to the site as this is doing really well gaining us an audience and starting to get the site more recognised.
