Review- 4th February

WINOL is still ahead of East London Lines in terms of the Alexa ranking figures. WINOL are currently around 40,000 ahead of London Lines with around 17,132 in the UK whereas East London Lines are at 57,000 in the UK.

The website for WINOL is currently looking very professional and updated. The barkers on the front of  the website are crucial and get people to look at the site. The BBC usually change their barkers every hour or so to keep people interested in the site and to give them higher circulation figures. The slider currently used on the home page for the news could include some features that include very strong images. The images for the news stories need to be taken by a camera instead of relying on grabs from footage as these aren't as strong visually. The shots that sport are currently using aren't the best shots visually as they are just a wide mid-shot that isn't focusing on the action or the scene. Instead we need a close up on the action happening or a big wide shot that shows the crowd and everything happening. We should also be constantly tweeting when we are out filming etc to keep the site updating and look 'live' as much as possible.

Sports Week also needs to improve on its viewing figures and this can be helped by featuring more on the home page of the site. We now feature comment on the home page which may help us increase our circulation figures. The comment is seen as a 'dustbin' column where anything can be written that may not be able to feature in the story. This can also get viewers interested in what people have to say and may encourage them to get involved and comment.

In terms of production some of the packages had a problem with lighting where people were advised to re-export their video. We should make sure we are all filming in 16.9 on the camera which is the default  setting on the new JVC cameras. The lighting is important for features as well as things such as fashion shoots need to be lit well in order for them to be effective. One other issue was the sound during packages as they differ vastly from one package to another. This needs to be worked on so that all packages are roughly the same volume before being ready for the bulletin and is something for the news editor to check. Formatting of the script needs to be focused on and we need to make sure that the guest editor for that week receives a copy of it.

The bulletin itself needs the music to be trailed underneath the presenters voice so that they can start to talk over it. At the moment the music is coming to an abrupt ending which sounds amateur and is noticeable. In the headline we need a sync from the Earl of Wessex Edward himself rather than footage of him opening the curtain as it doesn't explain to the audience what he is doing. We should never use a pan in a headline shot as this takes too long and shows what exactly is happening. An effective shot would be a quick glimpse of the bus and scrabbling around to make it more dramatic and make the audience want to watch it.

Our straps in the headline need to be bigger and bolder following the style of Sky News. In regards to the car registration in the royal visit headline we were asked to pixel the number flat for some reason. In legal terms there is really no issue as the only laws there are for this type of thing is defamation. This would only occur if we were implying that he was entering a crime scene for example where people may misunderstand and think he is up to no good. In this case however he is only pulling into the University of Winchester so there is no way we are defaming him. Secondly is privacy under section 8 of the human rights act. However as he is making a public appearance opening a new building in the university this is not breached. It is also argued that there is no 'normal family life' for royals as everything they do is in the public interest. This query meant that we had to take the bulletin down for an hour or so which is good in the way that we can edit it straight away but meant we lost a lot of views.

When you are trying to film a script you should always make sure you have an idea of the shots that you want as well as any quotes you may need. You should concentrate on your beginning and end (signing off shot) as these are both important and may relate directly to your script. It was interesting listening to the debate that took place over which story should be the headline. It was between the royal visit and the bus collision that took place in Winchester. As you know the royal visit took the headline even though it was a publicity stunt but this character is well known and I think by using someones name that people recognise will encourage people to watch the bulletin.

However the bus incident was turned around within a day which is pretty impressive and kept us up there with the local news. This is known as Eco-journalism and is effective when breaking stories are first heard of. The only problem with this story was that we didn't keep it updated which would have made the piece a lot more clear and professional.  We could have also interviewed people like shop owners and the public to make this story more dramatic and to find out exactly what happened. ITV interviewed Steve Brine for this story and had him standing at the scene in the rain which was very effective and 'real'. Using a piece to camera (PTC) can be effective at times but aren't always needed. You will see the local news channels using them as the viewers relate to reporters and like to see their reaction to certain situations.

When writing your script you must remember that it doesn't need to be overly detailed for news. This can seem like the reporter is rambling on and will cause viewers to get bored. Also if we do only have still images to use in a story make sure we use a move on it as this was very effective this week and looked like it was actual footage. In one of the links Steve Brine was mentioned however was not featured in the story at all. We should only relate to what is in the package in the headline as it is what people expect.

There was a good question about whether we are allowed to use fake sound underneath still images we may use. This is allowed as long as the sound is 'true' to what happened. This idea is basically the same as using photo shop and editing and changing images without changing the meaning of them.

I liked the bomb threat piece as it was like a feature in the way that they actually went in and filmed people inside the mosc. This was a good way to report a court story and had good natural sound as well as images. It was a nice change to having guilty buildings or a presenter doing a PTC outside of the court.

We should only use an interview in our package if it is strong enough and contains good quotes. Sometimes people seem to go on for to long and don't relate to the story that they are supposed to be part of. There was also a near fatal error that wasn't noticed in a package where someone in an interview mixed up 'county land' with 'council land' this changes the meaning of what they are saying and would need to be recorded again.

We should always start our story with the best and most interesting shot containing good natural sound that we have.
